There is no way to request to join a space. Somebody already inside has to give you the code.
Open the invite screen and a fresh code is generated. Codes are not case sensitive and are split in half, so reading one out over the phone works.
Whoever has the code enters it and joins that space. From that moment they see the live map, the saved places and the activity, and nothing from before they arrived.
